Admission is granted to all students who want to improve their writing, speaking, and comprehension of the English language. Thus, there is no minimum level of education or preparation required for admission.
In 2008, Adams College prepared a new and upgraded ESL curriculum with intensive and practical applications to real life and work situations.
ABC, Pre-Unit, Grammar & Unit Conversation Classes
The scores that students receive on their pre-ESL test, (the TOEFL or CASAS), and their performance in the in-depth interview will determine whether students will be placed in ABC, Pre-nit, or Unit classes.
ABC
Learn to read and write the alphabet, and read and write basic sentences. Students are required to attend class lectures four and a half hours per day, four days a week. The class is subdivided into two levels (ABC-1 and ABC-11). The textbook for these classes is Basic English Sentences. This class is conducted bilingually in English and Korean. Total class credit is 8.5 semester credit units.
PRE-UNIT
Learn to read and write basic English sentences and begin conversation about day-to-day life in the United States. Students are required to spend four and a half hours per day in class, practicing English conversation for one and a half hours and attending lectures three hours per day, four days a week. The textbook for this class is You Too Can Speak English. This class is conducted bilingually in English and Korean. The total class credit is 8.5 semester credit units.
GRAMMAR
This class teaches the essential aspects of basic English grammar. Students of ABC and PRE-UNIT classes must take this course in order to advance to regular conversation courses (Units 1-13). Classes meet for four hours per week every Friday for 8 weeks. This class is free of charge to students who are enrolled in ABC, Pre-Unit, or Unit classes. The textbook for this class is Basic English Grammar. Total class credit is 2.2 semester credit units.
UNIT CLASSES
There are 13 levels of conversational classes that are individually called a UNIT. For each unit, students will use specially designed textbooks, You Too Can Speak English, You Too Can Speak English-Pronunciation Guide, and You Too Can Speak English-Chart Book. Students are required to spend four and a half hours per day in class; practicing English conversation for two and a half hours and attending two hours of class lectures, four days a week. Total class credit is 25.5 semester units.
